Audra Mcdonald stands out in the breadth of her talent and her versatility as an actor and singer. She has been a six-time record recipient from the Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards in addition to one Emmy Award she received in 2015 from Barack Obama. Because of her stunning soprano's tone and unbeatable ability of telling dramatic tales her success has been evident in Broadway and in the opera as well as in both film and television. Alongside her theatrical work she maintains a major career as a recording and concert performer who regularly appears at world's foremost venues. McDonald was born in Fresno California to a music family, completed the classical vocal training she received at the New York's Juilliard School. Her initial Tony Award in 1994 for the Best Performance of a Featured actress in a musical, Carousel which was staged at Lincoln Center Theater. The next four years she won two more Tony Awards in the featured actress category for her performances on the Broadway productions Terrence McNally's production Master Class (1996) and the show Ragtime (1998) which gave her an unprecedented total of three Tony Awards before the age of 30. In 2004, she was nominated to win her 4th Tony Award for her performance in A Raisin in the Sun with Sean Diddy Combs. And in 2012, her 5th Tony and her first nomination in the Leading Actress category was won for her performance as the titular character in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. In the year she received her 6th Tony award in 2014 her performance as Lady Day in Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill became Broadway's highest-rated production. In 2017, she also performed in her West End London West End debut and was nominated to receive the Olivier Award. Along with making history with the most awards won by actors in competition, she was also the first person to receive awards in all four acting categories. McDonald has also appeared on The Secret Garden (1993), Marie Christine (1999), Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (2007 Twelfth night (2009) and the musical Shuffle Along Shuffle Along: the Making of the Musical Shock in 1921 as well as Everything That Followed (2016). She also made her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut in Twelfth night (2009). McDonald was introduced to the public via television as a dramatic actress by Peabody Award winning CBS's Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters first 100 years. The actress then starred alongside Kathy Bates and Victor Garber in the lauded 1999 Disney/ABC television remake of Annie as well as in 2000, she had a recurring role in NBC's smash series Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald won the first Emmy for her role in The HBO version of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit written by Mike Nichols, starring Emma Thompson. In 2003 she was back on the screen, this time with Mister Sterling produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr., with Josh Brolin. She became a character on The Bedford Diaries of the WB show The Bedford Diaries in early the year 2006. The following season, she was a recurring character on NBC's television show Kidnapped. McDonald received an 4th Emmy nomination for her performance in HBO's film special of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill in the year 2016. The actress starred with Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in The Bite a six-episode pandemic-themed show co-produced with Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios in 2021. McDonald appeared as U.S. prosecutor Liz Lawrence, a character she first appeared in the CBS drama The Good Wife legal drama in 2009. She reprised this role in 2018, as Season the regular Liz Reddick in Paramount+'s The Good Fight. As a result of her performance, McDonald received three Critics Choice Award nominees. The actress also appeared on Julian Fellowes historical drama The Gilded Age.
